Now one company operating out of Tokyo is offering a natural solution to the consuming straw issue. Maybell Japan Co Ltd has introduced “greener nature straws, ” made from grass of the species Lepironia grown on a pesticide-free farm in southern Vietnam. This grass has naturally hollow stems, so all it requires to turn them directly into drinking straws is cropping, washing, cutting into straw-size program plans, and drying in a special oven.
The resulting straws contain the crisp, thin texture so suitable for straws (and thus lacking in paper straws) so are completely stable in liquids. They are 100% biodegradable and can be stored for as long as a year after the particular manufacture date.
“Why are companies spending so much resources trying to grow biodegradable plastic straws or perhaps nicer paper straws if the perfect straws are just growing available? ” says Maki Yasuda, TOP DOG of Maybell Japan. “That’s what I thought eventually this winter when I used to be reading some news about the topic, and then remembered getting used nice grass straws on vacation at a resort a while returning. I thought wait, the reason why don’t people use which here? ” After several months of research, working along with partners in Vietnam, product or service testing, and developing the actual brand, “greener nature straws” was developed.
“Everyone knows the issue with plastic along with the environment, so I didn’t think it had been necessary for greener to maintain telling people about the evils of plastic, weak sea turtles, SDGs and such. We are all cognizant of those issues. I wanted greener instead being about how nice it truly is to drink from a straw created from real grass; how it makes you experience to be using an all-natural product that is certainly environmentally friendly; how great the grass straw looks from a tall iced drink. I'd like greener to have this particular happy, kind, positive character. ”
This approach looks like it's working, with the Prince Hotels on the Tokyo metropolitan area returning on board as among the first businesses to adopt greener nature straws. Extra establishments and retailers will be on way, which Maybell Japan expectations to announce via the greener brand’s social networking in coming times. The straws are available for retail, with 12-straw packs currently available on Amazon.
“If there exists one drawback to these kind of straws, it is the worth, ” says Yasuda. “Compared that will plastic and paper straws developed on an industrial range, it is several times higher end. But we’re talking just Couple yen for plastic straws employed by restaurants, so even if greener straws become more expensive it’s still not a large amount. Restaurants work on any pretty tight margin so inevitably many have to be quite cost-conscious. Hence, those adopting our straws will first be the greater upscale places in village, or shops that are usually specialized in say, organic and natural or natural food, which sometimes get enough value outside of using our straws for making sense of the value. I hope eventually, a lot more people in the industry will dsicover how much customers such as being served drinks together with greener straws and make sure it is worth the limited bit of extra cost. ”.
